It’s the Swiss Army Knife of AI from OpenAI, a San Francisco R&D shop set up to guide a path to safe artificial general intelligence and funded by Microsoft, Reid Hoffman, and Vinod Khosla. 

Generative Pre-trained Transformer 3 (GPT-3) is a deep learning language model that produces human-like text. The third-generation model “is the most powerful language model ever,” MIT Technology Review.

  1. As a person that uses a very similar, but simpler product in my daily life this article drew me in immediately. We all have our little Alexas that tell us what the weather is like or can pull up recipes on command but this product seems next level. In a time where most interactions are being done remotely, a little smart robot to have in your home to tell you if you are sick, or write you fiction stories seems very nice. The fact that it has the potential for use with malicious intentions is not that great but with how advanced all tech is now pretty much anything can be altered to do something different than the creators intended. With these units coming to learning programs so soon we should be ready for an ai tech boom. There will be one of these in your fridge to tell you when your veggies have gone bad and there will be one in your bathroom to order you toilet paper when you run out, truthfully the possibilities are endless when it comes to a tech that learns over time. I predict that in the future, companies will have these in their machines that generate business models or risk charts or anything, and they will learn trends over time and become more advanced at the tasks they complete. My worry for these is that people become too dependent on technology and it’s capabilities to the point where going out and buying the groceries turns into a task far too immense to accomplish, like the humans in the wall-e movies, but I could be wrong. Truthfully who knows… an ai could be responsible for finding the ever sought after cure to cancer or to the COVID epidemic that we see ourselves in right now. Even though right now we are only talking about something that might be put into music or art generating softwares, there is infinite potential here. Ai cores could become the thing making the next ai core for all we know, with these units going widespread I am excited yet slightly terrified to see where they end up 25 years down the line.

  2. Technology has a played a huge roll in todays day. Technology has changed so many peoples lives, and the way we live is crazy. From having electronic machines talking to us and showing us how they work, till cars basically running on energy. The car Tesla, doesn’t run on gas anymore, and basically you need to charge it in order to have energy to drive. We also have our phones that can do all of the above, from talking to “Siri” to being able to be on FaceTime and your phone at the same time. We also have very long inch plasma tv’s and we have very great computers and laptops. Apple is always coming out with new products for example a different generation of AirPods, or new phones dropping every year, so the technology will be beyond what we think in the next 15 years. I believe we will have all cars being charged in order to drive, and some robotic type cars looking all weird and stuff. The way we can be on a zoom call or teams call with 40+ people or even way more all at once is very crazy as well. We can learn for school because of this pandemic through a computer and I think it will only get better and improve. Our iPhones can have some much on them as in data and source that we don’t need to read a newspaper to know what’s going on or trending. The way we can have technology talk to us and respond to our questions is really surprising, its like talking to a person and getting a answer out of them. So as you can see I can’t wait wait to see what the future has in store for us.

  3. Technology has constantly evolved over the years and has evolved our lives on a daily basis. In the article, Vander Ark goes on to explain how the GPT-3 is the cream of the crop of AI. “It’s a super auto-completer. With a little training, it’s a writer, coder, composer, translator, and puzzle solver…Generative Pre-trained Transformer 3 (GPT-3) is a deep learning language model that produces human-like text.” The technology is trained by supercomputers that improves and solves issues that have to do with language conversions, answering questions quickly similarly to the Google search engine, and autocompleting photos, amongst others. However, this technology has taken false data before and pronounced it as true and reliable which takes a hit on the credibility for the GPT-3. The barrier of entry to get into this AI market is low for this technology partly because how it can take large amounts of data and compute it. “Tools like GPT-3 expand human capability while challenging our conception of intellectual property and reshaping views on what is authentic and human-made (Vander Ark).” Technology like this can help shape generations educating them on the power and use of AI technology.

  4. Technology is being integrated into every facet of human life. Robots are beginning to accomplish minor tasks like food delivery and telling the weather, leaving humans the ability to focus on more complex tasks. Intertwining technology with humans has become the focal point of many AI tech companies. We are at the point where technology can outperform humans in calculations and complex procedures. AI has the ability to find solutions to problems much to time consuming for any human to find. The GPT-3 AI is the newest innovation in artificial intelligence and can produce human like responses. As the knowledge base of the AI increases it is able to comprehend more and think more like a human. With 175 billion parameters, and ever expanding, this AI will become integral in creating a world where humans and technology co-exist. Creating an AI with so much data will drastically expand the uses of this technology. An interesting point in the article is the GPT-3’s ability to translate text, there are many historical texts that scholars are unable to translate, but given the amount of knowledge the AI has, it would be able to translate anything; possibly giving us a better understanding of who came before us. Integrating AI into music and writing is a tricky area. Can machine learning understand the nuances and sarcasm that are so integral to understanding modern language? Will a human be able to tell if a machine wrote their favorite song? If an AI has all of the knowledge of the world, then where would that put humans, there would be no use for humans to learn science or mathematics. I think AI is going to become integral to human life once it becomes widely understood and utilized. Utilizing AI to cure disease, search for life, and stop global warming, are all things that can undoubtedly be done. I think the future of an AI/human world is exciting. As long as the AI does not teach itself how to grow legs and start destroying the world, I think AI will improve life for everyone, forever.

  5. A transistor is a small component of a computer chip that can either amplify an electrical current or act as a switch. As the number of transistor increase, so does processing power, making electronic devices faster and smarter. A famous statement by Gordon E. Moore gave rise to Moore’s Law: The number of transistors that can fit onto a single computer chip doubles every two years.
    While he was not the one to coin the phrase or even claim that it was a law, semiconductor manufactures have used this famous statement as a guide for its long-term strategy. These actions have allowed companies like Intel to beat that pace, doubling transistors per computer chip every 18 months.
    That is how modern calculators have more computing power than the guidance system on Apollo 11. Now we have crazy new things like Blockchain and Artificial Intelligence. Some are raising concerns that technology has the potential to become powerful enough to be mortally fatal to humans.
    I do not expect to see a Terminator-like world in my lifetime, however, 2020 is certainly making me reevaluate what I think I’d ever experience, because I have faith that all this new potential will be used for the greater good. Education, engineering solutions, medical research, and general productivity can be greatly enhanced and improved.

  6. This article brought up a phenomenal point on educating our youth to deal with and coexist with artificial intelligence. We must equip students with the tools they need to compete in the world they are going to live in. There is a problem, however. Today, educators in K-12 are still catching up on having chrome books in class and struggling to deal with projectors. How are we to expect them to learn how to code and teach machine learning? The article also brings up teaching middle school students the ethics of A.I. We do not have any established ethical standards and are constantly debating with radically different opinions on what the ethics are. A lesson plan would struggle to remain unbiased and understandable at the same time. It’s also significant that not all students are going to be inclined to learn computer science. While entry-level programming is easy enough to teach in a classroom setting, it can take a real passion for pursuing an understanding of anything deeper. All of these issues being posed, I still think we need to work towards solving them. Income gaps are becoming more polarized, and in the far future, one will either be technically capable or not, as every other job is automated away with time.
    The war on normal people by Andrew Yang addresses atomization and stresses the importance of teaching people young and old how to interact with A. I so they aren’t left behind. Separate to the education system, he proposes universal basic income as a solution that would support people’s transition into an A.I based world and, further in the future, sustain those incapable of contributing to an increasingly automized job market. The problem of automation is incredibly important, and the education system is the first place to start.
    I am in a Data Science fast track that will get me a master’s in data science in 3 years. I look forward to learning more about the intricacies of how A.I and Machine Learning work, but most people don’t need that. They would be served perfectly fine with a broad understanding. If people become aware of what algorithms are capable of and the ethical dilemmas that ensue, we could have a more educated populace able to deal with the political problems we face today. People like Zuckerberg won’t be able to abuse the vast knowledge differential between him and his users on A.I. People would also become aware of when an algorithm is manipulating them. It would also educate the people to vote better on issues that affect us all. Educating the populace through the education system is vital.
