A marketplace like Upwork is supposed to solve a classic two-sided problem like this one. But the problem is so difficult that marketplaces often make it worse (and charge too much as well).

They make it worse by pushing people to be bottom-fishing cheap commodity providers. If someone searches for ‘logo designer’, there is a huge amount of pressure to be the freelancer who checks all the boxes, has decent reviews and is also the cheapest.

Freelancers, as not established service providers, have a difficult time finding the right fit for them in a very competitive market where the common believe is that the lowest ask is the most likely to be taken. The article emphasizes the risk that freelancers face while looking for potential clients. It is already a challenge to check all the boxes that clients have in mind while looking for a freelancer. The amount of the bid is not necessarily the determining factor, for clients seek to get the most out of a good freelancer with fair terms and work ethic. However, the competition is significant regardless. The text concludes that freelancing is a matter of relationships. Clients must find the right freelancer while freelancers must look for the right clients. I believe that freelancers have a very difficult job specially when first starting to build their client base. With other freelancers competing for clients, it has to take a while for newcomers to find their first clients. Freelancing, in addition, lacks all of the benefits of subordinate positions from established businesses. It is very risky for them to rely on wether they are going to be able to find the right client or no.

The author made a closing comment that really brought home the point of his article, “For most freelancers, the hard part isn’t doing the work–it’s being tricked into believing that they have to be the lowest bidder to succeed”. The Freelancers Union released that More than half (51 percent) of freelancers say no amount of money would get them to take a traditional job (Szczypinski). This statistic shows that employees in this line of are truly motivated by the passion for what they do. Which makes it’s harder for me to hear that freelancers are being taken advantage of in having to set lower standards of value for themselves. I do take notice to the fact that freelancers lack the benefits of subordinate positions from established businesses. However, the economic principle of market price gives established business in competition with one another a steady price to sell their goods at, give or take a few dollars depending on the good. Freelancers don’t have a “market price” to sell their services at, forcing them to cheapen their skills.
    Franz Kafka is the author of a short story called the Hunger Artist. His character, who publicly starves himself to gain the communities attention, acts as a symbol of “the suffering artist in society”. I made a connection to this piece of literature, because in a way freelancer aren’t getting the food they need, which for the sake of the metaphor means money.
    Upwork, the company at question is a California based franchise that according to their website “connects businesses of all sizes to freelancers, independent professionals, and agencies for all their hiring needs”. Upwork plans to fine clients who find freelancers on their site $50,000. As the article points out this is good for only one party involved, Upwork. For a company whose goal is to give the freelancer a global platform, this doesn’t seem to be in very good faith.

  3. I always really enjoy reading the posts from Seth’s blog. As someone who is extremely interested in art and the work ethic of modern day art, freelancing is a common topic that I stumble across. For many artists, freelancing is a type of end goal — who wouldn’t want to have the ability to decide on what you work on specifically, in your own time? Well, as stated in this article, there are many catches. In the art community, pricing is one of the toughest enemies for artists. Deciding how much your art is worth is a tough price in the first place, but many times, there seems to be a trend that occurs in buyers and observers — not understand and underestimating the time and work that goes into a piece.

    How much would you pay for a picture? To many, it seems ludicrous to pay an artist $80 – $100 for a head portrait. However, what many people don’t understand is that many detailed portraits take way more than 8+ hrs to create. Take that into account, and you realize that many artists are earning below minimum wage to finish your piece. As described in the article, another thing freelancers must worry about is actually finding work. Many people will not be able to assess the level of artwork that many artists put out, or they will try to lowball artists. Another thing to keep in mind is that these freelancers are self – employed — meaning that they most likely don’t receive benefits from an employer. This can make their lifestyle even more expensive and less lucrative. However, in the end, you are your own boss. The question — is if it’s worth it for you.

  4. The world of work right now is a bit “stuck”, that is why many people decide to become freelancers or create a company. Each option has its advantages and disadvantages. However, you have to be very clear about your rights and duties.

    There is no assurance of receiving a fixed monthly amount as a wage earner. In addition, there is no unemployment benefit and when you are freelancer you cannot ask for the drop except that it is a “temporary disability”.

    Your liability will not be limited. Everything will go through you, even those debts that you may get. In a company, the responsibility is limited and you should only answer for the total value of the share capital.

    If you think about financing, loans, etc., you will have to forget. To get a credit you will usually have it more difficult than society and unlike the employee, you will have to prepare your own invoices, have control of your expenses and billing.

    Being autonomous is also a risk in the reconciliation of work and family. Despite having the freedom to choose your work schedule, business demands and high responsibility for your future can push you to work longer hours and with less ability to disconnect when you get home.

    Dealing with clients in the field of freelancers is an increasing problem. It is common for us to cover more than we are capable of managing and we commit ourselves beyond our possibilities, and this can end in dissatisfaction, disappointment and broken promises with customers. Furthermore, competitiveness and the existence in the market of companies with more baggage and a professional character leave us less room for error.

  5. Seth’s Blog always interests me because he discusses well known and widely thought about topics. In this case, the discussion of freelancing gives me something to think about. I have never been one that was extremely interested in art or photography enough to want to do either one in my free time. However, I can definitely appreciate artists works and how hard they work to make beautiful pieces for us to see. I understand there are many different free lance jobs that can be done, but we mainly hear about painters and photographers. Freelancing of course has its pros and cons like any other job. After reading this article, it was really introduced how hard it can be to freelance. I mean of course anyone would want to choose what they do and when they do it. But, the problem is that no one picks you up on a job, there is no other way to pay the bills that you need. Additionally, as Seth mentions, there’s a price to pat for being the cheapest commodity around. You may get more business at times or at other times people may think that you’re so cheap because the work done is not high quality. The next thing becomes, how do you advertise yourself? How do you determine what your work is truly worth? There will be customers that feel that you are worth less than the given price. So, being a freelancer, do you negotiate and risk the price of losing business or just agree to do it? At a certain point, you know what you are worth, however, there is the risk of getting bad reviews from disappointment, broken promises, etc, that could down spiral your practice. Next, as a freelancer, there is much less room for error when you are your own boss rather than working for someone else. If you mess up large enough, your entire business suffers as compared to your division or team if you work under someone else. Last and certainly not least, as with any business, if you have no clients/customers, then essentially you have no business. This is more prevalent for free lance workers who rely daily on how many customers they have and how much each project is worth. I have a new found respect for free lancers and how hard it is for them on a daily basis to find their work just to pursue a passion.

Listen if there is something you should realize in life is that life is hard, unless you were born with a silver spoon in your mouth and have some inheritance or just live a life where you don’t have to work for anything then I want you to know that life is not easy. Nobody owes you anything in this life so you should do whatever you can to maximize on whatever opportunities are available. So, being a freelancer is not different it is hard work if its was not hard then everybody would do it but what makes it so difficult is other freelancers that you are competing with. I agree with the article when it says, “If someone searches for ‘logo designer’, there is a huge amount of pressure to be the freelancer who checks all the boxes, has decent reviews and is also the cheapest.” Everybody and it does not matter who you are I know that everyone looks at reviews for everything, especially now that we live in an age that is extremely digital and there is a lot of online shopping which means you can not physically see what you are buying then reviews are the only source of assurance of the product. Obviously when you are looking for a freelancer you want someone who is able to check all your boxes otherwise why you would hire them if they did not. Lastly everyone is trying to save their money and most people do not lie spending more than they need to so by also finding someone who can get the job done to your satisfaction at the cheapest rate would be a success. What’s tough is that there really is someone who will always be cheaper than you, so it makes it much harder to secure clients which makes being a freelancer difficult. If you want to be successful as a freelancer, you should just follow these 5 steps

    2. Work on your personal brand.
    3. Write a plan of action.
    4. Do your research and pay attention to competition.
    5. Get yourself a mentor—and your first client.

    According to this website those are 5 steps that you need to become a successful freelancer so if you are struggling as a freelancer if you are able to follow these 5 steps then I am sure you will be able to be successful. Freelancers are sometimes the less thought of when it comes to the four main types of jobs that people can have, a freelancer is someone one who instead of just working for one company is someone who can be contracted out to work for one or more companies or people at the same time. To be a successful freelancer, however, is something that is not so easy as you need to be an expert in marketing yourself and your skill set. While yes, to get any job, you need to be able to market yourself, but to be a successful freelancer, you have to take that to the next level, and in this process of marketing is where most of the problems for freelancers arrive. In a recent post on Seth’s blog titled, “The Problem for Freelancers”, this issue is discussed as well as what could be some possible clues to solutions to it. In the article, Seth addresses how the main problem with being a successful freelancer isn’t if you have the skills or not; it merely’s weather or not potential clients can even found you. Since once you do good work for a few clients, they will recommend you to people they know, and the cyclical will continue, and you will have plenty of work just finding the first few clients is all you need. In the post, Seth suggests a couple of ways to help you find those first few clients by stating that “The gig economy is based on the magic of finding the right person for the right job. It falls apart when it becomes a commodity marketplace in which each freelancer struggles to be valued for the work; they are able to create. For most freelancers, the hard part isn’t doing the work–it’s being tricked into believing that they have to be the lowest bidder to succeed”. Showing that if one wants to be found marketing yourself as the cheapest possible option may not be the best approach and inside, they should just market what there are experts along with doing this at a reasonable price. The reason this is a valuable option is because of checking off all the boxes when you may not be able to do something, just a simple check of the boxes you can do. Therefore, instead of trying to learn new skills, you simply just master the ones that you are already good at, thus, in turn, making you an invaluable freelancer, and more than likely, someone’s number one choice. In addition to doing this also not listing your price as the cheapest is a good idea because giving a reasonable price that isn’t the lowest at makes you look as if you perform better work then everyone else but keep a modest price for your skill set. Therefore, by only listening to the skills your sound at so that in time you master then and listing a price a little above that of the competition as a freelancer, you may be one step closer to completing the hardest part of freelance work; getting noticed.

There are many pros and cons to freelancing and obviously, the article just listed out all if not most of the problems encountered by freelancers: how long will the job last, having the lowest bid in the market to increase your chance of getting the job and unfair terms of services in freelancing sites. I interpreted the article made it seem like freelancing is just too much of a burden and is trying to relay the message: “freelancing is not worth it” by talking bad about it throughout the article. I must say that I don’t believe freelancing is as bad as the article says it is.
    Obviously, a freelancer will have to worry about not being hired due to freelancing being a non-permanent job but there are many goods news that comes as a perk of being a freelancer. Freelancers are flexible and like the article “The Future of Work Looks Like Staying Out of the Office”, freelancers are able to enjoy working from the comforts of their home especially during world crisis such as the current Covid-19 pandemic, freelancers are able to lessen their risk of getting the virus just by working from home.
    I felt like the author of the article also overthought “The problem for freelancers”. One may find themselves most likely out of work only if they are providing a service that is common in their job markets such as video editors or photo shoppers which many freelancers can do. Obviously, this wouldn’t apply to freelancers with skills related to a Computer Science major in which they would easily get a client and therefore obtain work. True, “bottom-fishing cheap commodity” does exist which is why some marketplace or freelancer sites instilled a reputation system in which customers can leave feedback and reviews on various freelancers so their work is not underpriced or underbid for those who are exceptional in their services.

  9. Over the course reading of several of the class’s blogs, it has become apparent that the “gig” economy is one the biggest issues facing the American worker in the modern day. Whether it be working under contracts that force freelances to seek arbitration against their employers rather than litigation, if they are employed by companies such as google, or having an inability to unionize, it seems to be a difficult position for any employ to be in. After reading this blog post, I now have a question why anyone would want to be a freelance. It seems to me that there should be several regulations that can address these problems.

    One of the first issues that should be addressed is how employers find freelances to employee. As mentioned in the article companies that proved services for finding freelances, have failed to implement a system were both the freelancer’s goal of finding a job that will pay well and the client’s goal obtaining a quality freelance. With certain companies charging ridicule prices for the use of their services, there must be alternative to find freelances. We can either achieve this by creating regulation that controls the price of service fees charged by companies that provide the services for obtaining freelance or create a federal service that handles the acquisition of freelancers. I believe that the regulation of the market is the best obtain because these services are already used by both many freelancers and clients seeking to employ them. This also cost less than the alternative because the government will not need to create a whole new service to handle the issue, rather the legislative just need to create new laws.

    The issue of forced arbitration would be a hard issue to solve, because the Supreme Court of the United States have upheld the enforcement of these contracts in their recent rulings on the subject. The only solutions that exist to solving the issue is either the use of walkouts and protests by employees of the companies that use arbitration clauses or new regulations can be passed that bans the use of arbitration clauses. The path of regulation should be the first path society should take for dealing with this issue, because it creates concrete protects against arbitration clauses that protests and workouts can never provide. The main issue with using regulation is that the Supreme Court can nullify it under constitution grounds, this is a credible outcome because of Supreme Court’s recent rulings. The alternative of relaying on employees to pressure their employers to abstain from using arbitration clauses in their contracts, have worked before, including google and riot games, but unlike regulations they don’t provided any legal guarantees that employers can’t arbitration clauses.

    Unionization is an issue that I believe is impossible for most freelances to every have. Believe this because freelancers are stuck in a competition over the available clients that exist in the market. This due to the nature of being a freelance, in which a person is self-employed and relies on clients for jobs. This forces freelancers to act as competing companies providing the same service, rather than individual employers one in the same field for the same employer. I Don’t see how this can be rectified other than having freelancers switch over to being fully-time employees of companies.

  10. This article from Seth’s blog was a good one. I have never considered how the market for freelancing can be so affected by the competitive rates that are charged. The post explains how the biggest problem freelancers face is getting found by the public because they feel the need to be the cheapest rate, but they still need ways of making a decent profit. Some companies could be used but they charge way too much and are not very dependable due to their habit of pushing people towards cheap commodity providers for the low prices but have the quality.
    Freelancers often like to retain clients so that they always have work and possibly get a referral or two by their clients. Being found is one of the hardest things to do in freelancing. Just like in real estate, starting up will be the most difficult part because you do not have any expertise or proof that you excel at your required field of work. Freelancers are completely dependent on their work and the quality of said work. Word can travel and it can travel very fast these days over the internet. If someone rants or has some distasteful remarks about the job that you did, that freelancer ould be out of multiple jobs because people will not want to hire them. They are fearful that they too will receive a bad job and not get their money’s worth.
    The article was closed in an interesting way saying that the hardest part of a freelancer’s job was not the work itself but into being tricked into being the lowest bidder. I do believe that in some cases where a freelancer is not a well-known name, they have to undersell themselves at first to create more business for themselves. It will still all be based on the quality of their work, however. Someone is not going to continuously receive calls from people when they keep producing a bad product, especially if they can get better.

  11. Freelancing does not seem like an easy job. Although at this time I think they have more resources on their side than ever. In Seth’s Blog he mentions the marketplace Upwork and how it is supposed to help freelancers with their problem of getting found. In my opinion I don’t even think the need to do that. Freelancers can use social media to their advantage. If I were interested in hiring a freelancer, the first thing I would personally do is research them online. Just because they are not a big company doesn’t mean they don’t need social media or a website. Having a professional website or app, or social media account displaying a freelancers work is very professional. Simply putting their information on Upwork or craigslist may not help them create a great reputation with good clientele. Upwork and websites such as craigslist leave too much room for comparison. Having one freelancers profile mixes wit thirty others is not going to be great for most of them. They have to get up to speed with technology. I believe some of the best freelancers who have used social media to their advantage are makeup artists and hair stylists. It is crazy to see how viral their posts go and how many followers they have. The first place clients go for a makeup artist is to their Facebook or Instagram. Many get most of their clients through posting pictures of their past work and having potential clients like their style. While others have become so successful on social media that they have created huge companies. One that comes to mind is Sellma Kasumoviq. She has gained a million Instagram followers and create a business on her own name, Sellmashop. She sells her own brand of makeup now because of high demand of her followers and her companies Instagram has over 50 thousand followers. This woman opened up her own studio of makeup where she now hires other makeup artists to do clients makeup. Another, even more successful makeup artists is Anastasia Soare, founder of Anastatia Beverly Hills. She has an estimated net worth of $1.2 billion and her company has over 20 million followers on Instagram. There are plenty more stories like this and they all skyrocketed to fame through social media and displaying their work online.

  12. After reading this article on Seth’s blog, I now realize how difficult it is to be a freelancer. Seth begins his blog by stating, “ the problem for freelancers is getting found. The idea of a freelancer, which is being self-employed and working whenever you want sounds great but in reality acquiring work and making enough money to support yourself is challenging.

    Seth continues the article by explaining how marketplace companies make the freelance market worse, “They make it worse by pushing people to be bottom-fishing cheap commodity providers. If someone searches for ‘logo designer’, there is a huge amount of pressure to be the freelancer who checks all the boxes, has decent reviews and is also the cheapest”. People who are freelancers work extremely hard and by forcing them to work at the cheapest rate, the companies are doing their clients a disservice.Seth also explains the economy of the freelancer marketplace, “The gig economy is based on the magic of finding the right person for the right job. Freelancers need to set prices at a certain level based on their time put in and the quality. A high level freelancer with a lot of experience should not have to be paid the same level as a freelancer who is an amatuer.

In order to be successful, the freelancer needs to know their worth. If their worth does not match with doing the work at the lowest price, they should not take that job. Freelancers should use other methods of obtaining work rather than using marketplaces. Through connections and cold-calling, freelancers would have a better time finding clients that would be willing to pay them what they deserve.

    This article has shown me that being a freelancer is something I never want to become. This article described a career that is unstable and hard to make money. A person who has a skill should not be able to only get a client if they’re working for the lowest price. Overall, I think any person who wants to become a freelancer should have a full-time job and do this part time because a full-time freelancer does not know where the next check is coming.

  13. It often comes up in discussion within class the relevancy of freelancers and their added prevalence in todays society of technology and accessibility. So, it was interesting to read in the article how freelancing can become a problem and the amount of jobs that will be available will be limited. One of the biggest things and I think most interesting is as it states figuring out who truly is a good freelancer and who is not. You would think that with the way that the internet works and the amount of services out there for these people, the ability to find a freelancer and a good one at that would be simple and easy. The problem however stems from these programs. That being that these websites do not actually provide a good environment for freelances to actually get the jobs people are looking for. They charge too much money to be on the website, make it hard for customers to find them, and force them to lower their fees to be the most appealing to the consumer. By driving the prices down, it is creating less and less profitability for the freelancers and driving their ability to be successful into the ground. So, the prevalence of freelancers may not be as big as I may have thought all because they are being pushed out and loosing their freedom to do work because of these sites and all of their term and systems. It is not good to see people taken out of their livelihood because companies are trying to make as much profit as possible even when they do not directly employ all of these people. Freelances must find other platforms that do not skim as much off of them and still give them the same ability to make money and put themselves out there as much as possible to give them a chance.

  14. Freelancing has become reputable for allowing the opportunity for people to make a life sustaining salary remotely, without the allegiance to a company or corporation. This helps both freelancer and the company hiring the freelancer simultaneously. In essence at least, it works when all the variables are correct. The way a freelancer profits from being an independent contractor who works remotely is obvious enough. Work hours that are highly malleable, a salary that can be scaled, no long term dependency on a client, along with the social implications of available free time to spend with friends and loved ones are just some of the attractive benefits of being a SUCCESSFUL freelancer. Now, if you are not profitable in your excursions into the freelancing world, the ramifications can be daunting to say the least. Not having a 9-5 is thrilling until you find yourself going weeks without attaining work from clients. To add insult to injury, even if you are above average in your craft, online marketplaces occasionally tend to house freelancers who charge low amounts of money for work. This can hinder your career drastically, especially if you are not world renowned in your field. If your work is only slightly better than most freelancers, clients may hire the lowest costing contractors because of the slight difference in quality of work. Then in turn, it becomes a game of who has the best quality of work and the lowest prices. This traumatic for freelancer attempting to make a living off whatever their field is, whether it be coding, copy-writing, social media marketing or graphic design. In any case, the quality of work decreases when workers are pushed to make their pricing as cheap as possible by marketplaces such as Fiverr, Upwork, 99designs, or Gigster. The reason for the marketplaces doing this seems to be, at least from my point of view, to stem from their desire to attract as many customers as possible. This also seems paradoxical to me because if these marketplaces want a larger customer base, why wouldn’t they put emphasis on having their freelancers charge healthy amounts of money for stellar work? So, in turn clients who can afford an expensive freelancer are more incentive to come to their website to find their new independent contractor. I believe I am perhaps missing the point, because it seems immensely preposterous to me that these marketplaces would push their freelancers to make their services cheaper. In the article “The problem for freelancers”, Seth Godin makes the point that Upwork is changing their terms of service in a way that would subject any client who hires a freelancer from Upwork to be fined $50,000 per freelancer. I have researched this new addition to Upwork’s terms of service and the only information I could find addressing it were the hyperlinked text that Seth Godin provided. In section 7.1, it states you may opt out of the obligations in Section 7.2 but only if the client or freelancer pays Upwork a conversion fee of the minimum of $1,000 USD dollars to the maximum of $50,000 USD. The obligations of Section 7.1 assert that you acknowledge and agree to the service fees that are explained in Section 5.1. It is clear Upwork is a marketplace that is for the most part concentrated on making a profit from the freelancers they give membership to instead of being focused on providing freelancers are capable of admirable levels of skill. As someone who has recently delved into the world of freelance copy-writing, this has opened my eyes to the notion that websites such as Upwork are preparing to swindle the freelancers as much as possible. The way Upwork is charging freelancers for a percentage of commission is like the way governments can push absurd tax rates upon citizens. The following few months will be interesting for freelancers across the world to say the least.

  15. When I began to read this article the first thing that I thought to myself was: what is a freelancer? After some research I found out that freelancers could be defined as freelancer, and freelance worker, are terms commonly used for a person who is self-employed and is not necessarily committed to a particular employer long-term. When looking deeper into freelancers I realized that a lot of people who offer security resources are in fact freelancers. My friend’s baby I work with at the hospital is a freelancer and for that provides her own security services at the front desk but she also contracts herself out to other employers when she wants to move to a new location meaning she doesnt work under a single employer for a long period of time. Now that I have explained what freelance work is and I have also given an example of what freelance work is, we can begin speaking about the issue at hand: what is the problem for freelancers currently? After reading this article I have concluded the main issue with hiring a freelancer and the astigmatism around it is that businesses don’t know who they can trust to do good work and who they have to watchout for. Marketplaces do not want to waste their money paying freelancers whose value of work is a lot less than the price they are tagging onto an hour only to have to repay for the work to be completed by the next freelancer. On the contrary to this point coming from the side of the companies the freelancers also have a strong argument for not wanting to be in this field of work anymore of feeling very underappreciated for the work that they do decide to take up on and complete. This issue that the workers face is that these employers do not want to pay high prices to freelancers because they do not want to miss out on money but workers do not want to have to consistently drop their work prices because they have to compete with other freelancers who are willing to drop their prices like crazy for a quick dollar and employment. The other issue these people are facing is the fact that they get paid way less then they feel that the value of their work deserves. Now the main issue that these people face is being tricked into believing the value of their work is less than they are receiving because they do not have things like union support to protect your wages or protect their rights as an employee before they get taken advantage of by these companies. Concluding these thoughts I feel that it is important to take into consideration the need for protection within the job market and feel that i would rather be an employee dedicated to a company then a freelancer.

  16. Unfortunately for freelancers who use websites like Upwork, the ones who are usually the cheapest appear first in the search results. For example, if you are looking for “logo design”, you will find thousands of people on the platform who are offering this service. But because of the minimum wage difference in other countries, it is often cheaper to hire someone outside the United States. Since it is a major disadvantage for the people living within the United States, they are forced to attract the customer’s attention to the quality of the work rather than their price. For example, giving out free samples or case studies of your work to show your potential customers that you stand behind the quality of your work. You should never charge less than what you think is a fair price for your work, even if it means being more expensive than those who appear at the top of the search results.
    It is obvious that freelancers do not receive any benefits since they are self employed, so setting a minimum price that you will not go below is extremely important. Since there is no “market price” for the jobs or services being offered, the market price is constantly going down. As I stated before, people from third world countries can accept much less than people who work here. So it is a major disadvantage for the freelancers here who are trying to be price competitive. Not only do they have to charge less to become competitive, but they also need to promote the quality of their work. It’s very hard to have good quality work at an extremely low price.

  17. Having a free-lance job could be a great thing, but there’s also many struggles with it. The first one is just the fact that you are essentially an upstart and do need to make a name for yourself. The next biggest problem would have to be the competition. As a free-lance you are competing against other free-lancers and other companies for work. With a competition like this happening, most clients/customers are always looking for the cheapest price. This doesn’t necessarily benefit the free-lancer as they are buying all their own equipment and shelling out time to come give you the services and goods that you need just to be barely making a profit. As a free-lancer trying to succeed you should reach out to friends and family and tell them about your work. Don’t be afraid to go around your own neighborhood as well and give out business cards or flyers to promote your work too. As a customer if you really enjoy the work of the free-lancer you hired be sure to tell your friends of the good work. My mother is constantly telling other people about the landscaper we use, and I have actually heard of at least 2 other people using him now. That great business!
