Apple And Stanford Medicine Announce Full Results From Apple Watch Heart Study

Apple and Stanford Medicine today announced the results of the Apple Heart Study. The study enrolled over 400,000 participants, making it the “largest study ever of its kind,” according to Apple. The findings were presented in New Orleans this morning.

The goal of the study, Apple says, was to evaluate Apple Watch’s irregular rhythm notification. If an irregular rhythm was detected, participants received a telehealth consultation with a doctor and an electrocardiogram patch for additional supervision.

  1. This article was a very interesting read. As a previous owner of an Apple Watch I am well aware of the “Heart” app that came with it. What I did not know was that Apple was utilizing the app, with the help of Stanford Medicine, to conduct a irregular heart study. With 419,093 participants I would not be surprised if others I know with an Apple Watch was a part of the “largest study ever of its kind.” Basically if a irregular heart beat was picked up by the Apple watch it would send a notification to the user through a telehealth consultation with a doctor and an electrocardiogram patch. After looking it up a telehealth consultation is the utilization of digital information, such as a phone or computer, to access services related to health care. An electrocardiogram patch (EKG for short) is a small electrode patch connected to the skin that is used to record the electrical activity of ones heart. Out of the 419,093, Stanford Medical resulted that 0.5 percent received the irregular heartbeat notification. That amounts to about 2000 people that were notified, which seems so incremental in comparison to Apples full study number. I would actually like to question the validity of this result. How accurate is the Apple Watch in the detection of irregular heartbeats? Also, how many of these cases actually helped in the detection of a real irregular heart beats? Lastly, how many were false alarms? I only ask this because this is a new study, therefore there must be complications and misinterpretations of and with data. I wish Apple would have answered these questions before announcing their results. Regardless, this study ran by Apple is the epitome of how technology can be used to elongate the human life span. With tools such as the Apple Watch, I ponder whether or not man kind will move towards the concept of cybernetic organism. Mixing both organic and biomechatronic body parts in hopes to help one better understand and avoid complications their body might have.

  2. The ways in which technology has advanced our medicine continues to fascinate me, especially after reading about Apples new study done with Stanford medicine. To think that a small watch simply worn around someone’s wrist has the ability to detect irregular heartbeats is truly game changing. Its nice to see a big corporation like Apple use their funding for something larger than themselves. It would be even better if other big companies continued this trend instead of leaning on ways to maximize profits that only benefited themselves. Apple has come an immensely long way since being first created, originating with simple computers to now watches that could possibly save someone’s life is a path that no one could have seen coming. It seems as if this is a trend that Apple is beginning to adopt especially since we even see apps on newer iPhone’s that can track how much you’ve walked in a day, calories burned, and other health statistics. In their study done with Stanford medicine, it was noted that there were over 400,000 participants making it the largest study done of its kind. Out of the 400,000 participants, the Apple watch was able to detect an irregular heartbeat .5% of contestants totaling to 2,000 people. One thing that I would have like to see in this research is how many of those 2,000 contestants who seeked medical help actually had irregular heartbeat, and how many were just simple false alarms. Without that statistic the whole study could be pointless because what if no one truly had irregular heartbeats or a risk of any heart issues. It may be due to the fact that this study is merely a beginning to things, but it would be helpful in the future if apple, or any other company doing this research, would make note of how many detection’s were actually true and helpful to the participants. The steps in which Apple has taken involving themselves in the medical field has the potential to become one of the greatest paths the company has taken yet. I genuinely hope that other corporations see this and are motivated to do the same because if billion dollar industries begin to partake in medicine, we could begin to discover new treatments for all sorts of health issues that may have seemed impractical in the past.

I’m sure that anyone after reading this article will be interested in getting an apple watch to become more aware of their heart health. This amazing product from apple saves people a significant amount of time by eliminating the hassle of scheduling a doctor’s appointment to simply receive a diagnosis. With the Heart study on the Apple watch, it will diagnose you without having to spend time going to the doctor’s office. This could be the start of a change in America’s problem with super high rates of heart-related deaths. When people get a notification from Apple stating that something is not normal with their heart, it allows them to have a more productive and meaningful conversation with their doctor. This study and feature were only possible with the help of the prestigious Stanford University’s department of medicine. Although, I’m sure that many people would agree with me that if the apple heart study sends you a notification regarding your unhealthy heart, you are going to be scared. Many people will surely think that they will have a heart attack within the next 10 seconds from receiving that notification. However, the amount of people that have received this information about their unhealthy heart, is significantly small. The results showed that “only 0.5% of the over 400,000 participants received an irregular heart rhythm notification.” I would have expected the numbers to be higher given that America is generally an overweight country. I’m sure that this will spark some form of attention towards Apple in the coming future. No one wants to pass away from a sudden heart attack, as they can be painful and one of the most unpleasant ways to die. The more people that have access to this feature, the better. I believe that this feature can significantly change the rate of deaths from heart diseases in the United States because of how popular Apple already is.

    As I was reading through this article, I found it very interesting how much technology has exceled throughout they years. For something such as a watch to elaborate on your health and warn you when any part of your health is abnormal is amazing. I think that the collaboration of Apple Watch and Stanford Medicine will bring a new, useful, and easier way of checking one’s health without going to doctor’s. I am not saying that a person should not go to the doctor’s office to check on their health, but all I am saying is that it is fascinating to see a new piece of technology that can give a person medical advice to improve their health. As stated by Sumbul Desai, Apple’s vice president of Health, “As physicians, we are always trying to find ways to offer patients health information that is meaningful to them for individualized care. Seeing medical research reflect what we’re hearing from consumers is positive and we’re excited to see Apple Watch helping even more consumers in the future while collaborating with the medical community to further research.”

  5. I had wrote earlier in the year about the decline of Apple’s ambitious goal of “Think Different’ after the passing of Steve Jobs. I had watched Steve Jobs’ commencement speech for Stanford, and he brings the audience on a journey through his life and how he became who he was when he stood in front of them. He had a passion for his work, and his stories and presentations later during electronics convention and conferences accentuate that. However, in my personal opinion, Apple as a progressive, forward-thinking company has stagnated in the years following his death. Long gone were the ideas that Jobs brought to the world, of revolutionized mobile phones and user friendly computers. An era came about where one phone was the same as the prior, with one screen being a different size and one camera got slightly more advanced – nothing was breaking forward as a new innovation for the phone or the company. However, I feel that Apple and Stanford Medicine’s heart study can be the next leap mobile phones. Prior to the smartphone, the internet could only really be reached from larger, clunkier laptops and desktops. Now, more serious, threatening conditions – like heart attacks and irregularities – can be monitored by the great population with unprecedented access and ease. Nearly everyone has a smartphone, which means that now nearly everyone can have greater security in terms of their health, and this is but of the first steps in revolutionizing fast, mobile, reliable healthcare.

This article really interested me because to see such a huge company such as Apple implement something like this into their watches, can be a very helpful mechanism, and to think of what could be done if some of these larger companies came together and sustained this type of idea and implement somewhat of the same feature in their products. From computers that used to be the size of an entire room to having a computer as small as your hand now. The fact that this watch can help save someone’s life is something no one really saw coming. In a news article, I found “Apple Watch saves man’s life, detecting potentially deadly heart condition” by ABC news, talks about a 46-year-old Ed Dentel who was notified by his watch about a heart condition called atrial fibrillation from an App he downloaded on his watch. He first thought it was a glitch with the watch but then he tried it on both hands and upside and downside of his hands as well and each time it came back atrial fibrillation. Concerned there might be a problem, he headed to the hospital where doctors confirmed has was in atrial fibrillation. This wasn’t the first time the Apple Watch has saved a life. A few months back 18-year-old Deanna Recktenwald, was at church and got a notification from her watch saying her heart rate had sky rocketed to 160 beats per minute. Turns out she was in kidney failure. With just these two examples you can tell how great of a piece of technology this watch really is and what it can do for so many people.

  7. Apple has been innovating with their technology and devices ever since their phone came out. With advances using their astound Apple Watch they are able to do more than ever. It is exciting seeing a device being innovated to monitor and assist a person’s health. Apple products come many different features, gadgets, and widgets. When Apple implemented the Health application on its devices it allowed many users to track different aspects of their health. From physical activity, to eating habits, to now heart monitoring, Apple and Stanford Medicine have opened a new and improved feature to the world. This was a smart move on behalf of Apple to team up with Stanford Medicine.

    I have always been skeptical of Apple products. The reason being is I feel as though they want too much personal information. I believe this feature is being used for good–monitoring and tracking the general health of its consumers. But when Apple implemented fingerprint touch and facial recognition to unlock phones, and Apple Pay and Wallet, I thought “they are tapping into our personal lives and our personal DNA” and that never sounds good. It felt like an invasion on my privacy. But now I feel as though Apple is bouncing back with the help of Stanford Medicine in a better direction when wanting to tap into our personal lives. This device could easily strike conversations between doctors and patients about irregular heart beats and positively impact one’s life. And the best part of it all is that it all comes with the device.

    I myself hardly ever use most of the applications that come with the iPhone. Although I do see some of them as useful and helpful in some ways, I can do without it. But this gives people an opportunity to be careful and helped by a device attached to their wrist. It is no different than a diabetic carrying around a device to track sugar levels or someone carrying around a heart monitor. Except, this one can text, call, play music, and much more. It would be nice to see the study used by more people. 400,000 is a substantial amount of people, but the more the better. I believe the relationship between doctors and technology can grow stronger as technology is being developed at a faster pace than ever for the medical field. Today we have devices that are saving lives and being cautious when humans aren’t.

    The article was refreshing as it gives a glimpse of the good that can come and is coming from technology. Technology has changed the world without a doubt, especially in the last half century. We as a society get caught up in the negatives that technology has created and forget to realize the advancements society has made for the better. Without technology we would be without most of the tangibles the world possesses. So in many ways society has a lot to be thankful for when it comes to the innovations from technology and the advancements of technology. It has developed the world we know today and affects many aspects of just about everyone in society. I have no doubt that technology will continue to improve and advance the medical world.

  8. I agree with Chance’s post. He discussed Apple’s new technology and how it collects data of someone’s heartbeat. If it becomes irregular or has a concerning rhythm, it will notify a doctor and an electrocardiogram will be discussed with the issue at hand. This procedure is very helpful with technology and is always evolving and changing in the positive direction. With this new technology, a person’s doctor would be able to see the patient’s data of their vitals and discuss any concerns they acknowledge. This would break barriers when a patient is too nervous to talk to their doctor or tell them they noticed something that was going on within their body and why they were not feeling up to par. Something like this could be beneficial for older adults and people who struggle with more severe illnesses. They could track their health and see if there are any issues the patient could be experiencing. Personally, my Mom and my Aunt struggle with high blood pressure and take medications and their blood pressures daily to make sure they are monitoring their health and that the medications they are taking are working. With this technology my Mom and my Aunt are able to monitor their blood pressure and heart rate while having their doctors be able to watch and see how they are doing and let them know if they, the doctor, sees anything that concerns them. Another example is my Aunt who has high blood pressure and is a borderline diabetic must watch her heart rate and what she eats. With this technology, she would be able to monitor her health and heart rate. By doing this she can let her doctor view the data on line of how she is doing and also let her know if the doctor(s) see something concerning them. With the success of this technology, it could change the way we view our health and how we can keep track of this in the future. As much as there are health bands that track our steps, heartbeat, and stair climbs like the FitBit, Apple could take a bigger step with their watch that could become a larger competition for the FitBit. The FitBit has since started creating different bands and are similar to the Apple Watches so that a person can respond to text messages, answer a phone call, and take notes. With Apple and FitBit becoming competition for each other, people will decide which they feel will work best for them. With Apple’s new technology it will change the way people monitor their health and possibly save more lives.

  9. I found this article very interesting. The discovery of an irregular heartbeat could save someone’s life. Companies should continue to try to improve medical technology. This could make the world a healthier place. However, I do not think the Apple Watch is accurate enough to find serious health issues.
    Primarily, the doctor should always be the first place someone goes for help. Doctors are trained professionals who are experts at diagnosing conditions. People should not rely on a watch to tell them if a condition is occurring. Also, blood test should always be taken, and the Apple Watch should never be a substitute to that. This feature is great, however, it is highly inaccurate. I own an Apple Watch and the results are not always consistent. I have got warned that my heartbeat was at a fast rate, however, I was also doing sprints. The alerts can turn people into hypochondriacs. And a technology error in the watch could make someone panic.
    Furthermore, I think an Apple Watch is only good for tracking exercise. They are very good at tracking steps. However, any other function the accuracy is not quite there. Even tracking sleep there is big flaws within the device. Personally, I think for it to involve doctors it needs to be thoroughly tested. If the Apple Watch is going to diagnose a condition it cannot be wrong. I do not think doctors should advise a patient based on an Apple Watch.
    Lastly, I do not think the Apple Watch will ever be a substitute for a doctor’s diagnosis. A doctor has to go to school for many years, and pass multiple exams. They will be much more accurate at making a diagnosis than an Apple Watch. Also, people who use the Apple Watch should not diagnose themselves based on the numbers. I think this technology could lead to wrong diagnosis, and can be harmful to the general public. I think owners of the watch should use it as a guide, however, it should not be used as a diagnosis. Technology needs to advance more for this device to work. Until then people should continue to go to the doctor.

  10. THIS is the data collection that we need. Apple and Stanford Medicine are on the brink of an extremely helpful study for everyone. From this study, consumers can be more aware of their health, know when to see their doctor, and what to talk about. As for Apple and Stanford Medicine, their study can only open more doors from here. Advancements in health technology is always beneficial, but a study of this size is a major breakthrough. Eventually, Apple Watches will be monitoring many aspects of our bodies, allowing us to get a closer look and be more aware of what is going on in our bodies without having to wait a year for your annual check-up with your doctor. Apple is making great strides in the health industry with the help of technology, and hopefully can continue to make advances in the future.

  11. Wearable technology has had a vast increase in the market in recent years, making users more aware of their fitness habits, making phone apps more accessible and much more. This study done by Apple and Stanford Medicine is extremely interesting to me as I have done research into the ethical implications of wearable technology previously, and the opinions I found were seemingly different than those in this article. First, many have felt that allowing a third party to access data from a wearable is privacy inhibiting, and that if used by an entity such as an insurance company, it could affect the user negatively. It is interesting to see that over 400,000 people participated in this Apple Watch heart study, because to me this proves the benefits of wearable technology itself, as well as the benefits of sharing information from the wearable. In this study, they tracked how many participants received an irregular heartbeat notification, and if it was detected, those participants received a telehealth consultation with a doctor and an electrocardiogram patch. From this, Apple stated that “many participants sought additional medical advice [following the notification]…” and that it “allowed them to have more meaningful conversations with their doctors”. This supports the idea that the data sharing from the fitness wearable was beneficial to those who received a notification that something was off, and it allowed them to get additional help. Fitness wearables can be beneficial in the sense that it can make the user aware of a health problem they previously didn’t know they had. These devices also give users a level of data to show doctors when they go in for visits, and this can further help doctors offer more personalized care. Again, there is concern as to whether the use of this data by third parties is ethical, however, in order for companies to even obtain the data from these wearables, the insured must agree to share the information with them, typically with a reward or discount as incentive. Technology companies who produce wearables have agreed that customers will own all data unless they otherwise agree to allow third parties to access and utilize data. Once they receive this information, it is theirs to utilize in any way they wish. For example, some companies are taking certain vitals and finding correlations between data and health outcomes, such as heart disease and depression, to potentially diagnose people with things they otherwise might not know they had. This is an appropriate use of the data as it is beneficial to the insured, as it could potentially identify a problem in its early stages. Overall, this study helps to prove the benefits of sharing wearable technology data with third parties, as it helped participants be more open with their doctors, helped to identify underlying health issues, and proved that the data can be used for good.

  12. When Apple first made the Apple Watch, I was thrilled. Not only does it digitally connect to my phone, but it also acts like a fit bit and tracks my daily steps, calorie loss, and heart rate. It has been a life-changing invention because I am easily notified of my calls, text messages, news notifications, heart rate, and GPS directions. This has made my life much easier and makes answering back to messages and phone calls so much easier. Now, with the Apple Watches’ relevance to health, Apple partnered with Stanford Medicine and conducted a study of 400,000 participants to study irregular heart rhythms. This is beneficial because now regular people are being notified of something that may help prevent traumatic injuries to them in the near future. If their Apple Watch can notify whether or not someone’s heart rate seems to be irregular, then it could prevent the lack of knowledge about a heart attack, which can save a person’s life. Additionally, this notification can allow people to make calls with their doctors and be able to get a diagnosis for unknown cardiac problems that could eventually become life-threatening. Which can help strengthen the bond between patients and medical professionals because many of the time patients will neglect their issues and not look for medical care. Therefore, if the Apple Watch notifies the individual that they have a serious health issue, then it will possibly initiate the individual to seek the medical care that they would not have otherwise done so.

    Although this is a great invention, it is not perfect. There is an obvious error with these systems, and they will never be completely accurate. An example would be measuring how many steps a person takes and how many the Apple Watch records. There may be times when the number is the same, but the majority of the time it will be different. The same goes for heart rate. What the person’s heart rate may be different than what the Apple Watch says it is because it is technology and technology is never 100% accurate with reality. It could get very close with only a slim margin of error but there will always be a deviation between actuality and what is “recorded.” But I would rather take the chance with error and have the opportunity to be notified than not. Even if the notification is wrong, I would rather go to the doctor’s office and make sure that everything is okay than finding out that something was wrong, and I did nothing about it. Thus, Apple Watches’ ability to notify its users when something is irregular is a huge step towards bettering our society.

    But this power that Apple Watch has could also be used against the people. When all this information is being collected by these large corporations, they can use it to send to insurance companies to decide what rates to give people and who should be accepted and who shouldn’t. Therefore, something that could be benefiting our health and preventing major health issues could be detrimental for us to find insurance coverage for our health. If the information from our watch or fit bit says that we are a huge risk, the insurance company will probably give a high rate because they know that the individual is a huge risk to their company. What could also eventually happen is that our employers will force us to wear these types of monitors, so they know how healthy we are so what we are doing every day of our lives. If we drink a lot our heart rate may be temporarily very high, and these companies could notice this which could cause them to question whether we are worth the risk to the business. Because heavy drinking or at a high frequency may lead to slower completion of work, which is not what a company wants. As well as if people are being restless or have serious medical conditions that could hinder the success and profitability of the company. Therefore, the use of technology such as Apple Watches may be beneficial to our health but could be costly in the future regarding our insurance policies and future jobs.
