Growing up on a farm in Idaho, I learned some timeless lessons at an early age–that every day began long before dawn, that hard work was the rule rather than the exception. Those lessons are just as true today as when I first helped my family harvest our crop of seed beans and sugar beets many years ago. There was another lesson I learned, too, that has continued to grow in value throughout my career: Doing well begins with doing right.
During my 36 years with Deloitte, I’ve seen many good things accrue in both prosperous and challenging economies for those who consistently act with honor and integrity. That’s why I believe that business organizations should adopt a new way to consider their actions in the workplace: ROE.
